The wrestling world mourns the loss of Rey Misterio Sr., uncle to the celebrated grappler Rey Mysterio, who has passed away at the age of 66.
Misterio Sr. began his career in the sport all the way back in 1976 and remained active for 33 years before he made the decision to bow out in 2009, eventually being inducted into the HOF in 2023.
“It is with profound sorrow that we acknowledge the passing of Miguel Ángel López Díaz, affectionately known as Rey Misterio Sr.,” Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide announced on social media. “We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and lift our prayers for his eternal repose.”
What Led to Rey Misterio Sr.’s Demise?
Lopez Dias is part of a huge family in the sport of entertainment wrestling and is one of the defining members of that legacy, going on to secure multiple titles across separate divisions as well as introducing his nephew to the sport too.
His nephew, who also goes by the moniker of Rey Mysterio, is regarded as one of the most iconic and greatest competitors in the WWE and has become heavyweight champion twice as well as WWE champion once.
Furthermore, Lopez Dias also trained Dominik Mysterio, a 27-year-old from San Diego who is the his grand-nephew, and competes in The Judgment Day series after becoming a two-time NXT North America Champion.
Lopez Dias’ cause of death has not yet been revealed but the news comes just one week after his brother, Robert Gutierrez, died at the age of 76. Gutierrez was the father of the highly successful Rey Misterio Jr.
“All members of the @luchalibreaaa family regret the passing of Rey Misterio Sr,” wrote Marisela Pena, President of Lucha Libre AAA. “We raise a prayer for his eternal rest and send our condolences to his family, friends, and fans. Rest in peace.”
