Mitchell Rutherford, a high school biology teacher in Tucson, Arizona USA, has resigned after a decade at the institution, citing his frustration with today’s students.
Rutherford could no longer tolerate his students’ overwhelming dependence on smartphones. Despite his efforts over several years to engage them in his subject and distract them from their gadgets, he was unsuccessful. “I lost my mind,” Rutherford confessed to reporters, visibly exhausted.
He added that he had been facing significant psychological issues this year due to his frustration with his job. Rutherford likened phone addiction to drug addiction. “The pull of constantly being on social media is as strong as the urge to use opioids,” the now former teacher remarked.
